My research activities at City are focussed on what I call Open Health Informatics - the combination of open standards, open source software and 'open systems' applied to health informatics.
By open systems I mean systems that have open (standards) interfaces that allow them to communicate with, embed or be embedded within other systems. Without open interfaces, many of the benefits of using open standards and open source software can be lost.
Most of my research falls into one of two areas:
- Creating, evaluating and experimenting with an open source software platform for Electronic Health Records.
- Applying informatics to solve issues at the organisational boundaries in a patient-centred, shared care health system.
In 2009 I am supervising four MSc projects:
- Evaluation of an Open Source EHR Platform
- Development and Evaluation of a Sample EHR Data Set
- Clinical Information Flow Across Organisational Boundaries, Using Open Standards and Open Source
- Open Source e-Health Toolkit for Rapid Development of Departmental Systems
