Short Biography

Maggie Cooper is Director of International Student Recruitment in the School of Informatics at City University, Scheme Director for our Systems Design and Technology Programmes, and Course Director for the Msc in Business Systems Analysis and Design. Maggie holds a B.A. (Hons.) degree in English language and Literature (University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 1979),and a PhD in Computational Linguistics (University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 1984). Maggie has held visiting posts at the University of Edinburgh, the University of Hong Kong (SPACE), and Singapore Institute of Management.

Her current research interests are in the areas of Socio-Technical Systems and Teamwork, Software Process Improvement, Dialogue Modelling, and IT for management in Higher Education and Government. She came to City University to work on the EU funded basic research project on Interactive Dialogues for Explanation and Learning -- IDEAL p3160 (1989-1992), which developed a discourse theory for explanation, together with advanced knowledge representation and planning models,and produced significant experimental results on human explanation dialogues. More recently, she was co-investigator on the ESRC Cognitive Engineering Programme funded project on Modelling Information Seeking Strategies and Resources -- MISSAR (1996-1998), which developed cognitive models of information retrieval tasks, query articulation structures, and designs for results vizualisation.
