intro

I am a Professor of Visualization at the giCentre with research expertise in interactive cartography and its use in geographic data visualization and information visualization. I am Course Director of the MSc in Information Management and contribute to a number of the postgraduate modules in the School of Informatics. I am a National Teaching Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. My colleagues and I were awarded the 'Best Paper' prize at the GIS Research UK meetings in 2007, 2008, 2009 & 2010, 'Honorable Mentions' at IEEE InfoVis in 2009 and 2010 and prizes in the IEEE VAST Challenge in 2009 and 2010 for innovative and effective visualization work.

recent news : kartographischen kolloquium

I gave a Kartographischen Kolloquium at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences.

I presented a series of giCentre ideas and applications including: placeSurvey; csrNet; bikeGrid and HiDE.

The seminar was organized by Gertrud Schaab and colleagues in the G(V)ISR group.

updates

research

My research focuses on designing analytical methods and tools for visually exploring geographic information. As such I have interests in Cartography, Information Visualization, Data Visualization, Design, GIScience and Human Computer Interaction. I have developed software and ideas that explore cartographic design possibilities for geovisualization. This includes software, such as 'cdv' and 'panoraMap', and novel exploratory views, such as geowigs, geo-centric parallel coordinates plots, space-time spotlights, the use of surface feature networks to describe behaviour in time and space and spatially ordered treemaps. I am a member of the British Cartographic Society and co-chair the International Cartographic Association Commission on Geovisualization. I organized the 2002 meeting of the Commission at City University. The work that developed from the meeting has been published by Elsevier Science in a collated volume that I co-edited. I am involved in the EU funded VisMaster consortium and have undertaken consultancy in the UK for Local Government, the Department for Communities and Local Government and the National Academic Data Centre, EDINA as well as overseas.

I have reviewed papers for a variety of publications, including the International Journal of Geographical Information Science, Computers and GeoSciences, the Journal of Documentation, JASIST, Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, Information Visualization and Computational Statistics. I am a member of the organising committee of the IEEE Information Visualization Conference (InfoVis), the programme committee of the IEEE VAST Symposium and the editorial boards of Computers Environment and Urban Systems and The Cartographic Journal. I have served on the programme committee of IEEE Information Visualization and co-authored editorials for special issues of IEEE CG&A, IVS and CEUS. In 2010 special issues of JLBS, IJGIS and CEUS will be published through the ICA Commission and I have acted in an editorial capacity on each.

teaching

I teach on a number of modules at City, usually with a geographic and visualization bias! I am personal tutor to students on our Information Management Masters courses and to undergraduate Computer Scientists. I have won grants and awards at City for teaching including an 'Innovations in Teaching Award' (2002) a 'Teaching & Learning Development Grant' (2004) and a 'Learning Development Project Award' from the Learning Development Centre (2009) and published papers on education in visualization. In 2005 I was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by the Higher Educatiom Academy.

administration

I have chaired the School of Informatics Academic Standards, Programmes and Practice Committee and acted as a member of the Board of Studies. I represent the School and Department on a number of University Committees and working groups.
