Current and Recent Activity ...

I am a Professor of Visualization at the giCentre with research expertise in interactive cartography and its use in geographic data visualization and information visualization. I have developed a number of innovative and interactive visualization techniques and applications and published research papers on geovisualization and information visualization that are cited by the academic community.

Notable software and techniques include cdv, panoraMap, 'geowigs', spatially ordered treemaps, OD maps, vizLegends, BallotMaps and the HiVE expression language and associated HiDE software. Much of my work is available through the OpenAccess repository.

InfoVis 2014 ... and more news ...

I've been asked to take on the role of Conference Chair at IEEE InfoVis 2014.

This is a real honour and I'm delighted to be doing so.

The meeting will be in Paris in November 2014 - the first time InfoVis has ventured outside Europe - and is being hosted by INRIA.

As co-chair of the ICA Commission on Geovisualization and an active contributor to the ICA Commission on Visualization and Virtual Environments I have edited the multi-disciplinary book "Exploring Geovisualization" (Dykes, MacEachren and Kraak, 2005) and recent special issues of IJGIS, JLBS and CEUS.

I am an Editorial Board member of Computers Environment and Urban Systems and The Cartographic Journal and a member of the Organizing Committee of IEEE Information Visualization and am Papers Co-Chair again in 2013.

I lead the INM316 Web Development, EPM948 Communication and Presentation and INM343 Research Methods and Professional Issues modules. I am a member of the Advisory Boad for the Learning Devleopment Centre at City and was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by the Higher Education Academy in 2005.

My colleagues and I at the giCentre have been awarded the 'Best Paper' prize at the GIS Research UK meetings in 2007, 2008, 2009 & 2010 for innovative visualization work. We were awarded an 'Honorable Mention' at InfoVis 2009 and won awards at the 2009 and 2010 VAST challenges in addition to prizes for our research from City University, Google and UKMap. Our work has featured in the Telegraph and on the cover of Panlibus magazine.
