Mixed Reality Geographical Information System

Natural Interactions

The manipulation of virtual information using marker cards is based on similar principles with the applications of ARToolKit tracking libraries. MRGIS superimposes virtual information onto the marker cards and then users can simply just 'pick up' and 'examine' the virtual information in an intuitive way which can be also very exciting. An example of a user interacting with a virtual representation of City University's campus is provided in the following Figure.

The biggest advantage of natural interactions is that users can interact with the virtual information in a very similar way in which they do in reality. In addition, this technique allows multiple users to naturally collaborate with each other. In the simplest form of collaboration, multiple users can interact with the marker cards and visualise the result into a large area display (i.e. a plasma screen). A more advanced form will immerse multiple users wearing HMDs.
