Ph.D. Student – Representative, Computing Department My Information page |
|
Hello! It was in summer 1999,
when Julie McCann asked me to take over the task as a Ph.D. Student - Representative of the department. I felt
honoured and have enjoyed my post ever since. Nevertheless, I will never
forget one argument of Julie that it would not be to much effort to fulfil
the task of a representative because there would be only one meeting of the
committee per term. Well, it was right that there was only one meeting per
term. However, I never saw my task only waiting passively to the next
meeting. As a representative, I
was and will be always open for ideas and comments of my fellow Ph.D.-students.
Furthermore, I invited for minor social events like common lunch in order to
support contacts between students. For example, we visited the St.-Johns Gate
one time, which is a historic place next to the university offering free
guided tours. I really appreciate to get your suggestions for further
meetings. If you have any proposals for improvement of the Ph.D. studies,
please to not hesitate to send me an e-mail or to come along. The current chair of the
committee is Roman Hovorka. Here
is a short description of the Research Students Committee and its tasks. Next meeting at 5th
June 2002. Student_Representative-Dateien\Research
Student Committee minutes - unreserved 27 March 2002 (My) Current activity: Books for the
library and the department I asked students of the department to send me lists
of interesting books, which they would like to be added to the central
library. Here is the current list. Please feel free to send me requests for
other books. I will forward your wishes to Roman Hovorka. What do you think of a department local library on
the 5th level in CIC? In discussion are reference books for example for
Java. Such books can be quite expensive if they are good. However, they are
only of use for the short period of a version. Thus, people do not want to
buy them themselves every time. On the other hand , they like to have the
opportunity to look up quickly a certain programming construct, for instance.
Thus, such a library should only stock books, which the people do not borrow,
but only read for a quick reference. Send me your opinion if you like. |
