School of Informatics - What students say about us

  • As a UX Consultant I looked to an MSc in Human-Centred Systems to modularise and enhance my existing knowledge as to HCI, UCD, Usability and Accessibility. My expectations of the City University London taught course to be the most current, relevant and pragmatic in the UK were indeed met. Moreover, the research element provided opportunities to work with leading usability and accessibility experts and practitioners in industry. The knowledge, experience and network of contacts obtained from this exposure continue to be invaluable.

  • This course has a good balance between teaching you academic theory and practical business applicability. The course is structured in such a way that it is possible to work and study at the same time.

  • City University London gave me the confidence I needed to invest in my career whilst the MSc in Information Systems and Technology seemed the ideal choice with regards to my aspirations. During my course, I fully enjoyed the modules, the environment and the learning procedures. It brought me an invaluable 21st century studying experience which, in turn, increased my insight and enthusiasm. It gave me many opportunities to carve my own path and rewarded my efforts every time I went the extra mile. By the end of the course, I had already reinvented my aspirations and my vision was stronger; nothing could stop me! I am grateful to City University London for providing me with an excellent platform to start a successful career!

  • I found my City classes interesting and extremely eye-opening, because they were very dynamic. There was an open communication between the lecturers and the students which stimulated and enhanced the contents of the subjects being discussed. I learned from my fellow classmates as much as I learned from the lecturers. In addition, my class was quite diverse. I reckoned nearly half of the class was made up of international students. They came from Greece, Sri Landa, China, India and Oman, amongst other countries. I expected that the BSAD course would prepare me to be an IT professional. What I liked about the course was that the curriculum contained theory and practical aspects of information systems in an appropriate proportion. It was the right course for me personally as I had no IT background prior to participating in the program and I did not expect myself to become a programmer or a database administrator, but rather as a mediator between the business groups and the IT people in an organisation. The BSAD program has enabled me to speak both languages more confidently.

MSc Business Systems Analysis and Design, 2007

  • The MSc in Electronic Publishing at City was excellent. It was a frantic 12 months – I designed and tested a computer game prototype for a group of very demanding seven year olds, created and built a web site for a community radio station, and interviewed some incredibly important people at the BBC, Sky News and the Times among others for my dissertation on online newsrooms. I was also invited to Texas to speak at a major journalism conference. I now create e-learning products in Flash for major Japanese companies such as Fujitsu as well as for international education publishers. I can honestly say that I use what I learnt at City almost every day in my role. If you want to pursue a career in new media, whether it be in production or management, then this MSc will give you a massive head start.

Ben Lupton, Project manager / ui designer -
    MSc Electronic Publishing, 2007

  • I really enjoyed the IS & T course at City. The course covers a broad spectrum of technology subjects ranging from very technical to more business-centric areas. From this point of view, the course is perfect for anyone looking to start, or further, their career in technology. I really appreciated the way I could focus my learning on a specific area through the modular course design. I also enjoyed the opportunity to research a subject area in great detail via the dissertation. After completing the course I joined the graduate scheme of a large financial institution in the City of London. The course modules that I studied were put to use immediately in my job and have continued to be extremely useful as time has gone on.

  • Having studied at City University the MSc IST course has proven to be a strong shield against the insecurity and uncertainty that we are all facing during these difficult times. The course enhanced in a professional manner my prior computing academic background. This course is of added value to computing professionals looking to improve their work skills and their knowledge base in various computer-oriented areas. Professionals from other disciplines will also benefit by getting either spherical or in-depth knowledge, essentially being able to customize their course by having a wide choice of modules. The course has a sound and clarified structure with dedicated staff whose sincere help was always present upon any student's request. Personally speaking, my career aspirations have been successfully materialized up to now, being an IT analyst-consultant in the 3rd largest bank of France with global presence in more than 85 countries. The worldwide reputation of City University along with the skills gained from the specific course have constructed a solid basis for my professional development as a competent member of the business world.

  • The MSc in Human-Centred Systems was simply amazing. From the very first lecture of the very first module, everything I learnt was spot on. Taught modules were hands on and offered practically everything you want when job hunting. Every time I mentioned that I studied at City University, people always told me how great the Centre for HCI Design is and how lucky I was to have studied with the lecturers there.

  • I chose City University London to study MSc Health Informatics because it is renowned for having the longest standing health informatics course in Europe. The subjects that the programme provides met my need for enhancing my technical skills in informatics and developing the way I critically conceive the wider context and attention to detail. The tutors were extremely supportive, encouraging and inspiring. Having successfully completed this very challenging course, I have proven to myself that nothing is out of my reach.

  • I have thoroughly enjoyed studying at CITY. My degree has expanded my horizons, and allowed me to acquire the skills and knowledge to be able to compete in a global marketplace. Within 2 weeks of finishing my degree I had an offer to join an international strategy consulting firm as a Healthcare IT analyst. I accepted and the combination of core informatics with business and management modules in my degree has proven invaluable for my career progression. I am now regularly involved with the development, delivery and management of various projects in fields ranging from Healthcare IT to Medical Imaging and Patient Monitoring. I have had articles and quotes published in industry media, while I have been invited to present on major industry events such as MEDICA and WoHIT. I have no doubt this would not be possible without a solid academic background in Healthcare Technologies, and I feel privileged to have been able to complete my studies at CITY.

    MSc Healthcare Technologies, 2005

  • My time at City was one of the best years of my life. I was doing exactly what I want to do at the exact period of my professional career, studying for my MSc in Health Informatics. I thoroughly enjoyed all my lectures and I gained wealth of knowledge I did not know existed out there. The university atmosphere was relaxing and I was very comfortable studying with all the other students, in fact I made friends for life with some of them. As I was sponsored by my Trust, doing this course has really enhanced my prospect within the organisation and have been promoted twice now since 2004. I give God the glory for this opportunity given me to study at City University and for progress I continually made professionally ever since.

  • Taking this demanding course at City University allowed me to view the field of Information Technology in a closer, more analytical and business-oriented way. This course for me was selected not on the basis of career prospects but rather from a personal desire to deepen my knowledge of the field. The truth is that the course fulfilled this objective to the maximum, even though my career eventually led me to a different field.

MSc Information Systems and Technology, 2001

  • Since completing my MSC Information Science in August 2000 I have had a pretty eventful career. By some weird twist of fate the job for Law Librarian at City came up as I was finishing the MSc and with my year's experience at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies it seemed the perfect role. Some might think work as an information professional within an academic library is a bit dull, but I love my job. My creation of the legal portal www.lawbore.net to meet the needs of students at City University has lead to many great opportunities; writing articles for journals, giving papers at conferences both in the UK and the US and perhaps the greatest honour, being named Best Legal Information Professional in an Academic Envrionment at the inaugral Biall/LexisNexis Awards for Excellence in Oct 2005. I have a dual role at City, also being responsible for leading the team of Learning and Research Co-ordinators as Head of Information Literacy. This is extremely challenging work; tailoring our services to the demands of each very individual School at the University. The course at City opened my eyes to how we could use our skills in new and exciting ways, and that hasn't faded. This is a great time for those beginning a career in the field of information and anyone considering this pathway would be sure to be inspired by the courses run by the School of Informatics at City.

  • The MSc Business Systems Analysis and Design at City University London is probably the best known and most respected programme of its type in Europe. Demand continues to grow for systems analysts, with average salaries exceeding 40,000 pounds. City's programme has a unique blend of strong technology knowledge with transferable skills in consultancy and project management. The BSAD course introduced me to the core skills that employers need for the the long-term: business analysis, SQL, use-case analysis, ERP and UML. From City I was hired by Ovum, the advisory and analyst firm, which launched me into a career consulting to technology and telecoms providers.

This course faces all the real life issues for building ERP systems through out their lifecycle. More importantly it gave me the opportunity to work in a multinational environment from which I gained a lot in understanding the way different people from different cultural backgrounds think and work. • The MSc Business Systems Analysis & Design course at City prepared me for many of the IT challenges and skills I needed in the real world of work and business. While many courses tend to focus around the theory and academics of IT and computing, this course at City did not. While there had to be some theory, it blended it into a very practical framework and environment which gave you the confidence to tackle these issues after graduating. Many of the skills and techniques I learnt at on the MSc course at City I am still using today - 20 years after graduating.

Alan Eager, Principal Consultant - Blackbaud

  • I have truly enjoyed my time on the course. The combination of health informatics modules together with the core informatics modules has provided me with the specialist health-related knowledge I need within the context of a wider understanding of basic informatics principles. The work has been intellectually challenging. The most important outcome of the course is that I now have the knowledge to be able to challenge any assumptions that either I, or others, may have. It is very empowering in the workplace.

    Dr Graham N. Smith,

  • I took the MSc in Information Science at City University in 2002-03. There is no doubt that I would not be where I am in my career without taking this course. The course confirmed to me that information science was the area that I wanted to work in, and it gave me a solid grounding in theories and practices which I have utilized in every job since I graduated. I am now line managing a team of Information Scientists and contributing to the strategic development of my organisation by placing informatics at the heart of what we do and promoting our ideas for improving how we work. Successfully completing the course was an important factor in giving me the confidence and skills to take my career to the next level
