City graduate awarded IAML music librarianship prize

Former Masters in Library and Information Studies (2005-6 - Distinction) student Charles Inskip has been awarded the E.T.Bryant Memorial Prize 2007 by the International Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres, UK and Ireland Branch.

City graduate awarded CILIP Postgraduate Prize

The prestigious CILIP Library and Information Research Group Postgraduate Prize 2006 has been awarded to Information Management in the Cultural Sector graduate, Neil Parkinson, who awarded the prize for his dissertation "What's special about special collections?"

City graduate named 'Best Academic Legal Information Professional' by BIALL

City's Emily Allbon, law librarian and former Masters in Information Science student, has been named 'Best Academic Legal Information Professional' 2005 for her innovative and user friendly 'LawBore' website. The award was presented by the British & Irish Association of Law Librarians (BIALL).

Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals logo   This course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP).

The American Library Association (ALA) does recognise holders of our CILIP accredited masters level courses. There is a specific memorandum of understanding between the ALA and CILIP that confirms this for British masters degrees. Please also note that a graduate from the City Library Science course would indeed be eligible to apply for a professional post in the USA: the courses would be recognised.

Overview

Delivered by the Department of Information Science and the Department of Cultural Policy and Management, this course equips you for professional level entry into a career in information work.

The course focuses on information creation, organisation, retrieval and dissemination in the cultural context. These are highly marketable skills, pivotal to the successful functioning of any organisation. The course delivers a powerful mix of theory and practice, focused on the needs of employers. It gives equal weight to the two aspects - information management/informatics and the cultural and creative sectors - enabling students to focus on aspects of the overlap of particular interest to them.

The course is particularly suited to those already working in the field who want to update their knowledge and skills, or those wishing to move into this sector in mid-career.

The Department of Information Science and the Department of Cultural Policy and Management are established internationally as pioneers and leaders in postgraduate education in their respective fields. They have strong links with the information and cultural industries, including online publishing, arts organisations, museums and galleries, new media, and heritage organisations.
