Undergraduate Placements
One-year Placements
There are two types of undergraduate placement available to School of Informatics students at City University London. Details of our one-year placements are below. For details of our Professional Pathway scheme click here
One-year Placements
One-year placements are taken after students have successfully completed Part Two of their studies; students work between nine and fifteen months for the placement organisation before returning to City to complete their final year.
The Professional Liaison Unit (PLU) is responsible for students on placement. We deal with placing students with employers, alumni events, practitioner input to courses and course accreditation. Over a hundred students are placed with a range of employers each year, many of whom offer several placement opportunities. The PLU helps to equip undergraduates with the key skills for successful integration into placement employment through the design and delivery of a Personal Development programme.
Students are supported by the PLU whilst on placement by a Work-based Learning Advisor (WLA) – a tutor from the PLU who is assigned to the individual and who guides them through a British Computer Society approved placement scheme. Students on one-year placements are normally visited three times by their WLA who guides them through the requirements of the scheme.
There is a wide range of placements available to students in a variety of different organisations. If an organisation has an IT requirement, then there will be a role that students from one or more of our courses can fill. We are always keen to hear from employers who may have placements to offer.
Placements can take place anywhere in the world, providing the work contains a suitable IT component. Placements tend to be paid – although this is not a requirement – and typical pay for a full-time placement in London in 2008 was £15,000 - £18,000 pa.
Placements often feed into students’ choice of final-year project many of which are completed with the employer. Each year after graduation it is quite common for students to return to their placement employer.
Students who have found a placement for the following academic year should contact the Professional Liaison Unit
