We support distance learners all over the World by developing and providing access to high quality learning materials through our managed learning environment.
The giCentre has an international reputation and publication record in high quality teaching and in the delivery of online and computer based learning. We have received awards for innovative and effective online learning support and have published extensively in this field.
Each week all students, whether studying at City or from off campus, gain access to an extensive set of digital materials through our managed learning environment. These resources include comprehensive lecture materials (our own 'text books'), data sets and GIS software, interactive software that we have developed to support learning and practical exercises.
Some, but not all, of our lectures are streamed, meaning that students can participate online in real time from off campus, or view lectures subsequently in their own time.
We provide a discussion area for each module through which staff and students can interact and we encourage students to use the discussion areas to develop ideas, gain support and acquire feedback on their work and progress from teaching staff.
We make great efforts to ensure that our distance students have an equivalent experience to the face-to-face learners in London - and indeed are required to do so by the UK Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education which evaluates academic standards in UK Universities. Our courses therefore comply with their Code of Practice on 'Collaborative provision and flexible and distributed learning (including e-learning)'.
All students have access to a rich digital library - indeed the library at Northampton Square is increasingly moving towards electronic delivery of journal papers and other documents. We ensure that both distance and face-to-face students collaborate online and learn from each other's experience too.
Students have successfully completed Masters degrees at City in GIS from places as diverse as North America, the Carribean, Africa, the Middle East, South-East Asia and across the UK and Europe.
Distance learners are more than welcome to use the University facilities and attend lectures and classes at City should they be in London and wish to do so. Equally, those studying in London benefit from all of the electronic materials developed to support learning from a distance.
An MSc, PG Certificate or PG Diploma in GIS from City University London is a valuable qualification in the GI Industry, and those gained by distance learners are of exactly the same value, indicate exactly the same level of achievement and result from exactly the same methods of assessment as those awarded to students who study in London.
So why not study at City from a distance ..?
Or study at City in London, but benefit from the distance learning support to study flexibly in your own time ..?
